Position Available: Agricultural Research and Development Specialist

Mumias District Farmers' Cooperative Union is seeking a dynamic and innovative Agricultural Research and Development Specialist to join our team in Western Kenya. Our company is devoted to enhancing agricultural practices and improving the livelihoods of local farmers. We are looking for a talented individual who is passionate about driving agricultural innovation and promoting sustainable farming methods.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting research to develop and improve agricultural techniques that increase crop yield and quality;
  • Implementing and monitoring field trials for new crop varieties and agricultural methodologies;
  • Collaborating with local farmers and stakeholders to understand their needs and challenges;
  • Providing technical expertise and training to farmers to support the adoption of innovative agricultural practices;
  • Evaluating and recommending suitable crop management practices to ensure sustainability and environmental conservation;
  • Participating in the development of agricultural policies and initiatives;
  • Contributing to the creation of educational materials and outreach programs to disseminate agricultural best practices;
  • Staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in agricultural research and technology;
  • Coordinating with external research institutions to leverage their expertise and resources for mutual benefit;
  • Collaborating with the management team to align research initiatives with the Union's strategic goals and objectives.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field; Master's degree is preferred;
  • Proven experience in agricultural research, development, and extension services;
  • Deep understanding of local agricultural practices and challenges;
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute agricultural trials and field experiments;
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including farmers, government agencies, and research partners;
  • Passion for sustainable agriculture and improving the well-being of farming communities;
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities;
  • Proficiency in relevant computer applications and data analysis tools;
  • Fluency in English and a strong command of Swahili is highly desirable;
  • Willingness to travel and work in rural areas as necessary.
